General SMP Questions

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical treatment that creates the appearance of natural hair follicles on the scalp. Tiny pigment deposits are carefully placed into the scalp to replicate the look of real hair follicles, helping to create the appearance of fuller hair or a closely shaved head.
SMP can be suitable for men and women experiencing hair thinning, hair loss, receding hairlines, baldness, alopecia or visible scalp. It can also be used to camouflage scars and improve the appearance of areas with reduced hair density. A consultation is recommended to determine whether SMP is suitable for you.
Yes. When performed correctly, SMP is designed to replicate the natural appearance of hair follicles. At NanoScalpink, the treatment is tailored to your natural hair colour, skin tone, existing hair density and desired result to create a natural-looking finish.
SMP is similar to tattooing because pigment is implanted into the skin, but the technique, equipment, pigment and depth of implantation are different. SMP is specifically designed to replicate the appearance of hair follicles rather than create traditional tattoo artwork.
Everyone has a different pain tolerance, but most clients describe SMP as mild discomfort rather than significant pain. We take your comfort seriously throughout the treatment and will make sure you are as comfortable as possible.
Most clients require more than one session to achieve the desired result. The exact number depends on the level of hair loss, the treatment area, skin type and the result you are looking for. Your personalised treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation.
Treatment time depends on the size of the area being treated and the type of SMP you require. Your appointment can take several hours, particularly when treating larger areas. We will discuss the expected treatment time during your consultation.
SMP is a long-lasting treatment, but it is not considered permanent. Over time, the pigment gradually fades due to factors such as sun exposure, skin type, lifestyle and natural skin ageing. A maintenance session may be recommended in the future to refresh the appearance.
High-quality SMP pigments and correct application are important for achieving a natural result. Pigment may gradually soften and fade over time rather than remaining as strong as it was immediately after treatment. Your individual skin type and lifestyle can also affect how the pigment ages.
Yes. SMP can be used as a density treatment to reduce the visual contrast between the scalp and existing hair. This can create the appearance of thicker, fuller hair without adding actual hair follicles.
Absolutely. SMP can be an effective option for women experiencing thinning hair, diffuse hair loss, alopecia or visible scalp. Female SMP is carefully customised to create a natural appearance while maintaining the existing hair pattern and density.
Yes. SMP can be used to camouflage certain types of scalp scars, including scars from hair transplant procedures and other injuries or surgeries. The suitability of scar camouflage depends on the condition and maturity of the scar, so a consultation is essential.
SMP may be suitable for certain types of alopecia and can help create the appearance of hair follicles or reduce the visibility of the scalp. Suitability depends on the type and condition of the alopecia and should be assessed during a consultation.
During your consultation, we discuss your hair loss, treatment goals, existing hair, skin tone, desired hairline and the areas you would like to treat. We will explain the recommended approach, expected results, number of sessions and aftercare requirements before you decide whether to proceed.
Your hairline is carefully designed around your facial features, age, existing hair pattern and desired appearance. We will discuss your preferences during the consultation and create a hairline that is designed to look natural and proportionate.
You will see an immediate change after treatment, but the appearance will continue to settle as the skin heals and the pigment softens. The final appearance should be assessed after the healing process has taken place.
It is normal for the treated area to appear slightly darker immediately after the procedure. Mild redness or sensitivity can also occur. As the scalp heals, the pigment settles and softens, resulting in a more natural appearance.
You will receive personalised aftercare instructions following your treatment. Generally, you will need to keep the treated area protected and follow the recommended aftercare routine while the scalp heals. Avoiding excessive sweating, swimming, direct sun exposure and unnecessary touching during the initial healing period may be recommended.
Recovery time varies from person to person. Most clients can return to their usual routine relatively quickly, but certain activities such as swimming, intense exercise and prolonged sun exposure may need to be avoided during the initial healing period. Your exact aftercare instructions will be provided after treatment.
Yes. Once the scalp has fully healed, you can shave or clip your hair as normal. Many clients choose to keep their hair very short to complement the SMP result.
Yes. You do not need to be completely bald to have SMP. It can be used alongside existing hair to create the appearance of greater density and reduce the visibility of the scalp.
SMP can be performed on a wide range of skin tones and types. However, every client is different, which is why an individual consultation is important before treatment.
Certain skin conditions may affect whether SMP is appropriate or whether treatment should be postponed. During your consultation, we will discuss your skin and medical history where relevant and advise you accordingly.
The cost of SMP depends on the area being treated, the extent of hair loss and the type of treatment required. Because every client is different, we recommend booking a consultation for an accurate personalised quote.
Yes. A consultation is an important part of the SMP process. It allows us to assess your scalp, understand your goals and create a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.

Before Your Treatment

Before your appointment, please follow the pre-treatment instructions provided during your consultation. We may recommend arriving with a clean scalp and avoiding certain products or activities before treatment.
This depends on the type of SMP treatment you are having. We will advise you whether shaving is necessary before your appointment. For some treatments, keeping a small amount of hair may be helpful when assessing your natural hair pattern.
Yes. SMP can be suitable for clients with longer hair, particularly when treating thinning or increasing the appearance of density. Your treatment approach will depend on your individual hair pattern and goals.
Yes. SMP can complement a previous hair transplant by helping to improve the appearance of density or camouflage visible transplant scars. The scalp must be sufficiently healed before treatment.
In many cases, yes. However, the scar must be fully healed and suitable for treatment. We will assess the scar during your consultation before recommending SMP scar camouflage.
You don’t need to bring anything specific. During your consultation, we will discuss your hair loss, treatment goals, desired hairline and expectations. If you have photographs showing your previous hairline or hair density, these can also be useful.
Your hairline will be carefully discussed and agreed before treatment begins. We take the design process seriously because the hairline is one of the most important elements of a natural-looking SMP result.

Aftercare & Healing

Your scalp may appear darker than the final result immediately after treatment. Mild redness, sensitivity or tightness can also occur. This is a normal part of the healing process.
Freshly implanted pigment initially appears stronger and darker. As the scalp heals, the pigment settles and softens, creating a more natural appearance.
Healing varies between individuals, but the scalp generally settles over the days following treatment. You will receive detailed aftercare instructions specific to your treatment.
You will be given specific instructions on when and how to wash your scalp after treatment. It is important to follow these instructions carefully during the initial healing period.
Intense exercise and activities that cause heavy sweating may need to be avoided during the initial healing period. Your personalised aftercare instructions will explain when you can safely return to your normal exercise routine.
Swimming should generally be avoided during the initial healing period because prolonged exposure to water and chemicals such as chlorine can interfere with the healing process. We will advise you when swimming is safe again.
Direct sun exposure should be avoided while the scalp is healing. Once fully healed, protecting your scalp from excessive UV exposure can help maintain the appearance of your SMP for longer.
Sunbeds can contribute to pigment fading and skin ageing. We recommend protecting your treated scalp from excessive UV exposure to help maintain your results.
Your aftercare instructions will explain when it is appropriate to wear a hat. Once the scalp has settled, a hat can also provide useful protection from direct sunlight.
You should wait until the scalp has fully healed before shaving. We will advise you when it is safe to resume shaving or clipping your hair.
SMP gradually fades over time, so some clients choose to have a maintenance treatment in the future. The timing depends on your skin, lifestyle, sun exposure and how your pigment has settled.
Once your scalp has fully healed, protecting it from excessive sun exposure and following a suitable scalp-care routine can help maintain the appearance of your SMP. We will provide guidance based on your individual treatment.
If you have any concerns about your scalp or the healing process, please contact NanoScalpink. We are happy to provide guidance and advise whether you need further assessment.

Your SMP Journey

At NanoScalpink, every treatment is individually designed rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. We focus on creating natural-looking results that complement your existing hair, facial features, skin tone and personal goals.
SMP is a long-lasting solution rather than a permanent one. Pigment naturally fades over time, and maintenance treatments may be required to refresh the result.
That’s exactly what the consultation is for. We will assess your individual situation, explain your options and answer your questions so you can make an informed decision without feeling pressured.
